Flume and JPEGMAFIA put out the We Live in a Society EP together in May 2025, and "Is It Real" is its most fully realized track. Flume is the Sydney-born producer who redefined what Australian electronic music could be on an international stage; JPEGMAFIA is the Baltimore-raised, Brooklyn-based artist who has spent the last several years making experimental rap records that refuse to sit still. Together they share an appreciation for chaos that resolves into something genuinely musical. Ravyn Lenae's presence on "Is It Real" is the variable that makes the track land differently than the rest of the EP. Lenae, the Chicago singer who has been building one of the more careful R&B catalogs of the past few years, brings a melodic grounding that contrasts with everything the production is doing around her. It is not a comfortable combination. That is the point. We expected this collaboration to be interesting on paper. Hearing it is something else. "Is It Real" is three artists operating at the edge of what makes sense and trusting each other to land it.
