"Sold The Boat" is one of those song titles that functions as its own shorthand for an entire emotional state: the thing you gave up, the life you chose not to keep, the decision that still sits somewhere you can feel it. HAFFWAY's Sam Westhoff works in this space consistently, and Wither is full of that kind of compressed meaning. The song sits later in the album, after the harder tracks have done their work. That placement matters: by the time you reach "Sold The Boat," the record has established that Westhoff is not trafficking in general feeling but in precise, located experience. This one benefits from that context. It reads differently as part of the whole than it would as a standalone single. Westhoff has Songwriters Hall of Fame recognition and a career that long predates this project. The fact that Wither sounds like a debut in the best sense, like someone discovering a voice rather than deploying a toolkit, is one of the more surprising things about it.
