Hether is an artist working in a delicate space between acoustic folk and bedroom pop, and "Heavens Just A Mile Away" is the kind of song that works best when you are not entirely sure what it is about until it has finished. The title positions the song in territory that is spiritual without being religious in any conventional sense: the idea that something transcendent is just slightly out of reach, close enough to feel but not to hold. The production stays minimal throughout, which is the correct choice. Hether's voice carries the weight the song needs, and cluttering the arrangement would dilute the effect. The writing trusts the listener, which is a quality we respond to regardless of genre. She is early in her career with a small catalog, but "Heavens Just A Mile Away" is the kind of song that suggests more behind it. We pulled it because the writing earned it.
