"LILAC HUES" is the closing track on Lapsley's third album I'm a Hurricane I'm a Woman in Love , and as a closer it does what the title suggests: softer, more blurred, the album settling into something that has processed all the energy that came before it. Holly Lapsley Fletcher is from Southport, England, signed to XL Recordings at 19, and has spent a decade developing a production sensibility that has moved from glacial electronica toward something warmer and more structurally complex. The album title is its own emotional claim: a hurricane is force without control, and love as Fletcher describes it does not behave. "LILAC HUES" is what remains when the hurricane has passed. The production is close and soft, the vocal sits in a different relationship to the arrangement than on the louder tracks, and the effect is one of earned quiet. She sounds nothing like who she was on Long Way Home in 2016, and everything like a natural development from that record. "LILAC HUES" is where that development arrives.
