"Whiskey In Reverse" is one of those titles that inverts the expected direction of the narrative. Whiskey in country music goes down; this one is doing something else. The phrase suggests rewinding, undoing, going back, which aligns with the broader arc of I'm the Problem : a record about accountability that keeps returning to how things used to be and what they cost to become. The production on this section of the album is among the most atmospheric on the record. Wallen has always been good at deploying contrast: the louder, more conventionally country tracks doing one kind of work, the slower and more atmospheric ones doing another. "Whiskey In Reverse" is in the latter category. He wrote or co-wrote the majority of his fourth album, which matters for understanding what these tracks actually say about him. "Whiskey In Reverse" is him writing from inside the experience rather than constructing an experience for the listener. The difference is audible.
