The song does not pretend the world is fine. Barber has a 2x platinum certification behind him already, which means the audience for what he does is already substantial. "Man of the Year" is him stepping toward something more introspective than previous singles: the title is ironic, the song is earnest, and the gap between those two things is where it lives. Country needs young writers who are not afraid of the harder questions, and Barber has shown consistently that he is not.
