Before The Data
Music discovery. No algorithm. No agenda.
Where This Started
In 2007, Chad Hillard launched Hillydilly from Vancouver with a simple premise: find the songs that matter before anyone else does. No label deals, no playlist placement fees — just ears, instinct, and a relentless obsession with what was coming next.
Over the following decade, Hillydilly became one of the most trusted music blogs on the internet. The site had a gift for finding artists in the moments before everything changed for them — the quiet weeks before the viral moment, the debut single before the major deal, the bedroom demo before the world caught on.
Artists Found Here First

The End of Hillydilly
In May 2020, Hillydilly closed. Thirteen years of posts, discovery playlists, and early artist features — archived. The music industry had shifted. Streaming had changed the math. And the blog format that had defined indie music discovery in the 2010s felt like it needed to evolve or move on.
It moved on. But not for long.
Before The Data
Before The Data is the next chapter. Same mission, sharper tools. The name says everything: before the streams rack up, before the algorithm surfaces it, before the data tells you it's safe to care — that's when it matters most.
The blog is back. The ear is the same. The only difference is we've got better ways to find what's coming — and a responsibility to share it while it's still early.
